Welcome to Netherwood Tennis Club.
Netherwood tennis club is a small, private and friendly club with a focus on tennis and good times.
Nestled in a quiet, wooded neighborhood in Plainfield, we’re a quick drive from Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Clark, Westfield, Cranford, Fanwood, Metuchen, Mountainside, Rahway, Scotch Plains, Warren, Bound Brook, Middlesex and more! We’re about 12 minutes off route 78 and 8 minutes off route 22.
We have 6 perfectly maintained Har-Tru courts, which is the surface of choice for most players:
- Lower impact, less fatigue and 85% less injury.
- Har-Tru is 10 to 15 degrees cooler to play on than a hard court.
- Har-Tru offers avid players the ability to play everyday without the joint jarring stops that are common on hard courts.
- Our drainage system is so efficient the courts are ready for play just 10 minutes after a shower.
We open mid to late April and close October 31st, from morning to dusk.
Netherwood’s History
Over 100 years of great tennis and greater friendships
Since its opening over 100 years ago, Netherwood Tennis Club has been serving up a love of tennis and friendship that has touched five generations in the Plainfield area.
While our focus is on tennis, it is not the only activity offered at Netherwood. After a set or two of tennis members often play Bridge, Dominos, and Backgammon.
Social activities also include BBQs, dances, and theme parties. Many will drop by just to watch tennis and enjoy the company of the Nertherwood family.
Netherwood is also home to the Annual Westery G. Horne Scholarship Classic Tennis Tournament, which raises funds for Plainfield High School graduating seniors.

The Courts
Two Watering Cycles Daily
Our courts are typically watered twice per day — at 10 am and 3 pm. The sprinklers run on a staggered schedule starting with courts 1&2, then 3&4, then 5&6. Our courts are playable about 10 minutes after watering. Note – the watering schedule may change based on local conditions and weather.
The tree-lined club is nestled in the center of a residential neighborhood and enjoys peaceful views of the wooded area, complete with deer, birds and other wildlife.
Netherwood Tennis Teams, Tournaments & Round Robins
Ladies Doubles Team
For the 2024 season, the Netherwood Tennis Club’s ladies’ team participates in the NJWTL (New Jersey Women’s Tennis League) Series 5. Matches are played at 9:30 am, mid-April through mid-June.

What is the guest policy at Netherwood?
Guests are always welcome at Netherwood Tennis Club! Bring your guest along for just $10 for the day. A “guest fee” folder is in the shed, leave a check or envelope with cash, indicating your name and the date of your guest.
What time are the courts watered?
Court sprinklers come on at 10 am and 3 pm in a staggered manner:
- Courts 1 & 2
- Courts 3 & 4
- Courts 5 & 6
Post-watering, the courts are playable in about 10 minutes.
Is there a pro available?
Netherwood Tennis Club has a pro on-call, however if you would like to bring your pro as a guest and use the courts for a lesson, that’s fine.
What outdoor club league(s) does Netherwood participate in?
The Netherwood ladies’ team currently plays series 4 inter-club tennis, with matches on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am. starting in April. The format is 4 courts of doubles, best of 3 sets with a full third set (no tie break) and no sudden death point.
